Anabolic steroids are known in the medical community as anabolic/androgenic steroids, which are part of the steroid hormone family with testosterone being a cousin. Anabolic steroids cause protein synthesis reactions to increase at the cellular level, thus increasing the production of protein. This results in the amassing of cellular protein tissue, which causes the buildup of muscle in the human body. The process also increases appetite, bone growth and production of red blood cells.

Anabolic steroids were originally used solely in medical procedures to stimulate bone marrow and increase red blood cell counts in patients. When the other effects, such as muscle growth and increased muscle strength became widely known, athletes made a beeline to the drug and began taking it wholesale in an effort to better their chances of victory on the playing field. This process went on for many years until officials began to notice the nastier side of anabolic steroid use and the unfair advantage it gave its users on the playing field. Today all major professional sporting leagues such as the NFL, NBA, FIFA and the Olympics have banned its use.

Beyond giving its user an unfair advantage, anabolic steroids have several major bad side effects that can injure and even cause the death of the uninformed user. Long-term use of steroids can cause such things as an unhealthy increase in bad cholesterol and high blood pressure in both men and women. These steroids can, in short term use combined with proper diet, medication and exercise, be used in a safe manner. However, due to the illegality of use in major sports and their current controlled substance status, anabolic steroids is a topic not widely discussed before someone decides to use them for their beneficial aspects. It is extremely important that the intending user goes through his or her physician first, and if the drug is banned in your sport, too bad; you have to work hard just like everyone else.
